Emotions are to be named not shamed.
There is no conversation around wellness that does not center on emotions. Emotions are the core of our being. They are where we react, respond, and move from, and they are often the most misunderstood parts of our beings.
In a world full of narratives on how we should or shouldn't feel, being in connection with yourself and aware of who and how you are is the key to showing up in harmony with your body, mind, and spirit.
In therapy, when we speak of emotions, we begin with the term "emotional literacy." There has been a lot said on emotional intelligence or emotional awareness, but emotional literacy focuses not only on being able to identify and tune into others' emotions but also on being literate and well-versed in your own emotions and how they show up and feel, from body sensations to the words we ultimately speak.
The worksheets below are two of my foundational tools in getting to know and be more comfortable with my own emotions. Download your worksheet here and your feelings wheel here if you are curious and make note of what each word brings up for you. I come back to this wheel at least once a day, and it has helped me deeply in my internal language around what and how I feel.
I hope this week feels warm for you,
